12: Hidden Dangers

Lily Dodson

May 4, 2735 – 8 Hours Later – Morning

Lily groaned as she slowly woke up, noticing that Freya didn’t have her arm wrapped around her, only for her glowing citrine eyes to pop open when she recalled that Sam and Winter left for the night. Glancing urgently over her shoulder, she relaxed some when she found Freya lying with a couple of pillows under her head, her expression relaxed as she typed on her phone.

Her crimson eyes glanced at Lily from her movement.

“Good morning, sweetie,” Freya said warmly. “I enjoyed the snuggles.”

“Umm, me too,” Lily agreed, flipping over and propping her head up with her arm. “Did Sam message you?” she wondered, trying to keep her voice down to avoid waking Eden up, who she assumed was in her crib.

Freya nodded, turning on her side too, and setting her phone down but leaving the screen on to illuminate the space between them in the dark windowless bedroom. “Yeah, he messaged us at like four this morning, after Winter fell asleep. Said things went well, and that what she had to say probably wasn’t what we expected.”

“Oh?” Lily said in surprise. “What did you expect? ‘Cuz I hadn’t really thought about any solid ideas. Other than maybe she used to be a bitch or something. Like, a mega bitch.”

Freya smirked. “Like me?” she teased.

Lily grimaced. “Oh no, I didn’t mean it like that. I never thought of you that way, even though I knew most other people did.”

She nodded, sighing heavily. “I know. But that’s because I was really nice to you.” She frowned. “And really, that was only because I wanted you.”

Lily shook her head. “You were just fed up with people,” she countered, trying to reassure her best friend.

Freya sighed. “Yeah, maybe.” She then grinned. “Seeing that woman’s comments in Sam’s head, Liz Knight, calling people ‘little shitheads,’ I feel like we’d get along really well if we ever got to meet.”

Lily scoffed playfully. “I’m surrounded by a bunch of old farts.”

Freya’s expression was unexpectedly serious, her crimson gaze intense. “Hopefully you’ll be old with us,” she said seriously. “If not from the superpower Sam accidentally gave you, then from Heidi.”

Lily nodded, smiling weakly. “So you didn’t answer my question. What did you think Winter was going to share?”

Freya sighed heavily, glancing past her head at the wall. “Honestly? Probably that she had a lot of skeletons in her closet – literally. She’s worked with the government, likely multiple governments since she didn’t even grow up here, and she technically doesn’t have to abide by anyone’s laws.” Her crimson eyes refocused on Lily. “So I figured she’d done some pretty shady stuff. And possibly was apathetic when doing it. A cold-hearted bitch, I guess.”

Lily pursed her full lips, her brow furrowed, as she considered that.

“But I guess not,” Freya continued, seeming pensive now too. “I saw how she reacted to killing the Sheriff, so it wouldn’t make sense for her not to be sensitive to hurting others.
